X-ray magnetic circular dichroism of model Heisenberg ferromagnets

We review first the principles of the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) which will be used to investigate the magnetic properties of Europium Chalcogenides. These compounds are good models of magnetism in solids and were selected to illustrate the potentialities and limitations XMCD at high excitation energy. A thorough analysis of the Eu L-edges XMCD spectra allowed us to identify several effects which, if they are not properly taken into account, may cause the failure of the magneto-optical sum rules at the L-edge of rare-earths. These effects include: (i) the exchange splitting of the 2p core states; (ii) the crystal field splitting of the 5d final states, and (iii) the strong 2p→4f quadrupolar contributions to the XMCD spectra. It is also shown that Magnetic EXAFS measurements at the Eu L-edges combined with XMCD studies at the Chalcogen K-edges produce strong evidence that the highly localized 4f moments of Eu are indirectly coupled via the magnetically polarized p-states of the anions. This is the first time that such magnetic interactions mediated by the anions are unambiguously detected by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
