Orbital ordering and metal-insulator transition in V[sub 2]O[sub 3]

We reexamine the ground state properties of the Antiferromagnetic Insulating Phase of V[sub 2]O[sub 3] in the light of the recent experimental observations by L. Paolasini et al. [1] based on Resonant X-ray Scattering at the V K-edge and non-resonant magnetic scattering. We propose a model capable of reconciling their finding that the V atoms are in an S=1 state with the concomitant evidence of an Orbital Ordering of the magnetic electrons. Realistic calculations for the response function of the non-magnetic resonant scattering based on the 3d charge distribution suggested by the model show an amazingly good agreement with the energy and azimuthal scans presented in ref. [1] Its relevance to the physics of the low-temperature (150 K) metal-insulator transition is also briefly discussed in the light of the inelastic neutron scattering data. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
