ABSTRACT
Temperature dependence of elastic moduli of uniaxially reinforced GFRP for temperature range 20–60C is measured by an extended double through-transmission method, which does not need the temperature dependence of coupling medium. In addition to the echo signals used in the double through transmission method, the wave which has reflected twice at the sample surfaces is also recorded. With the measured arrival times from the reflector without a sample, with a sample between the transducer and the reflector, the longitudinal velocity of the couplant is removed from the expression of the phase velocity of the sample. Thus, we need not the temperature dependence of the velocity of the couplant. The quasi-transverse velocities have measured for a series of incident angles, from which 5 elastic constants of transversely isotropic GFRP are estimated. The elastic constant E[sub 3] parallel to the fiber direction lowers by 25% with an increase in temperature from 10C to 60C, whereas the constant E[sub 1] perpendicular to the fiber direction lowers by 20%. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
