ABSTRACT
For wide range of NDE applications, Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT) is one of the classical ultrasonic imaging techniques which is proposed to improve sizing and defects characterization. However, SAFT calculation is based on complex back-propagation theory. Simplification hypotheses are needed for practical computation, and it is crucial to clearly identify the applications that can really benefit the most from this imaging technique. In this work, we experimentally investigated and evaluated SAFT approaches on weld samples. Experimental results and set-up parameters were compared with theoretical predictions. Practical SAFT advantages and limitations are reviewed and requirements for an optimal and adequate use of the method are proposed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
