ABSTRACT
The vortex picture of confinement is studied. The deconfinement phase transition is explained as a transition from a phase in which vortices percolate to a phase of small vortices. Lattice results are presented in support of this scenario. Furthermore the topological properties of magnetic monopoles and center vortices arising, respectively, in Abelian and center gauges are studied in continuum Yang-Mills-theory. For this purpose the continuum analog of the maximum center gauge is constructed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

We review recent developments in understanding the physics of the magnetic monopoles in unbroken non-Abelian gauge theories. Since numerical data on the monopoles are accumulated in lattice simulations, the continuum theory is understood as the limiting case of the lattice formulation. We...

Correlations of the topological charge Q, the electric current J[sup e], and the magnetic current J[sup m] in SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the maximal Abelian projection are investigated. It is found that the correlator 〈〈 QJ[sup e]J[sup m]〉〉 is nonzero for a wide...

We examine the low-energy dynamics of four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and calculate the values of the gluino condensate for all simple gauge groups. By initially compactifying the theory on a cylinder we are able to perform calculations in a controlled weakly coupled way for a...

We are going to make use of the regulated polar angle which had been introduced by Boulware et al.. to show that in the SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory when the magnetic monopole is carried by the gauge field, the Higgs field does not carry the monopole and vice versa. In the Yang-Mills-Higgs...

The low-energy electronic structure of icosahedral fullerenes is studied within the field-theory model. In the field model, the pentagonal rings in the fullerene are simulated by two kinds of gauge fields. The first one, non-abelian field, follows from so-called K spin rotation invariance for...

We consider the effective field theory of a graphene monolayer with the Coulomb interaction between fermions taken into account. The gauge field in momentum space is introduced. The position of the Fermi point coincides with the position of the corresponding monopole. The procedure of extracting...

The proof of the Aharonov–Bohm (AB) effect has been one of the most important experiments of the last century and used as essential evidence for the theory of gauge fields. In this article, we look at its fundamental relation to the Dirac monopole and string. Despite the Dirac string...

The Abelian monopoles in the Maximal Abelian projection of the three dimensional pure SU(2) gauge model are studied on the lattice. Using a method of blocking from continuum we find that the behavior of the (squared) monopole lattice density can be described by a Coulomb gas of continuum...
