A brief review is presented of the ideas that motivated the first studies of the (e,e[sup ′]p) reaction type, but with proton probes. The reasons for the evolution to the electron probe are presented along with some interesting results that were observed. These results provided many of the reasons for building Bates. The present status of the field is discussed where interference and polarization observables play a prominent role and define much of the future course of research. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Nuclear microprobe was used to measure single aerosol particles (SAPs) indoors from Shanghai.
