Suprathreshold stochastic resonance

A new form of stochastic resonance, observable in multilevel parallel threshold networks, is introduced. Unlike classical SR, this new form of SR-termed suprathreshold SR (SSR)—is found to offer a near optimal method of enhancing signal transmission in the presence of internal system noise. In particular, it is demonstrated that, when trying to detect signals that are comparable in magnitude to the internal noise, it is beneficial to design the network around the SSR effect. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
