ABSTRACT
The article reports on the dialysis-associated hepatitis outbreaks on renal units in Great Britain that occurred between 1964 and 1972. Particular focus is given to the outbreak of hepatitis at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Edinburgh dialysis units in 1955/56 and 1969/71 along with the measures taken to curb the same. Facts including the occurrence of outbreaks, cases registered of patients and staff infected with hepatitis, and deaths registered during all the outbreaks at renal units are provided. Also highlighted is the 1972's Rosenheim report for prevention of outbreak, the European Renal Registry's hepatitis infection figures, and a 1975 novel by Colin Douglas, The Houseman's Tale.
