ABSTRACT
The article discusses highlights of the 30th annual Joe Alex Morris, Jr. Memorial Lecture conducted by Nieman Fellow 2007, Dexter Filkins at the Nieman Foundation on February 3, 2011. Filkins shared his insights about the past and future of Iraq and Afghanistan and the challenges of investigative reporting in war locations. He describes the change in the quality of life in Iraq during his return to the region in 2008 as much improved, and cites the difficulty of distinguishing Afghanistan's government from the drug traffickers and the Taliban.
