ABSTRACT
The article offers information on the use of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) in locating and mapping subsurface contamination of brownfields. It says that LIF has been verified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to accurately map heterogenous distribution of oil, fuel, and other non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL). It adds that LIF takes advantage of the inherent fluorescence properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) to detect and determine the type of soil contaminants.
