Structural changes in ammonium perchlorate under compression to 5 GPa

The effect of pressure to 5.5 GPa on the structure of ammonium perchlorate (AP, NH[SUB4]ClO[SUB4]) was investigated at room temperature. X-ray diffraction studies and high-resolution Raman spectra reveal two phase transitions, one at about 1.5 GPa and another at 3.3 GPa. The phase at 1.5 GPa is indicated by new diffraction peaks and a discontinuity in the pressure-induced shifts of certain Raman frequencies, and is most likely a molecular change in AP. The high-pressure structure, above 3.3 GPa, is characterized by an entirely different diffraction pattern and two new Raman modes, and is a new structure with possibly hexagonal or tetragonal symmetry. The isothermal compression of AP was used to obtain isothermal equation-of-state parameters for the ambient-pressure phase to 1.5 GPa.
