Electronic and molecular structures of polyanionic C[sub 60] fullerene and high-spin C[sub 60][sup n-] clusters studied by ESR/2D-electron spin transient nutation spectroscopy

A quartet state of trianionic C[sub 60] fullerene was for the first time detected by ESR spectroscopy. The assignment of the spin-state quartet was confirmed unequivocally by pulsed ESR-based 2-dimensional electron spin transient nutation (2D-ESTN) spectroscopy. Spin Hamiltonian parameters of the quartet-state trianionic C[sub 60] fullerene were determined by means of fine-structure spectral simulation: g=2.0025, |D|=0.0014 cm[sup -1], E=0 cm[sup -1]. A quintet state of polyanionic C[sub 60] clusters was also detected by 2D-ESTN spectroscopy. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
