ABSTRACT
Two applications of the technique of two-dimensional correlation (2D) analysis to problems of polymer characterization will be presented here. The first application deals with the reorientation dynamics of polymeric liquid crystals under conditions of externally applied stress. The side chain liquid crystalline segmented polyurethane under study consists of polysiloxane soft segments with pendant liquid crystalline mesogens, and traditional MDI/butane diol hard segments. The second application of the technique is the area of photoacoustic depth profiling where 2D FT-IR aids in the visualization of photoacoustic signatures that arise from different depths. The laminate under examination is a submicron thick coating of PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) on a much thicker base. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
