ABSTRACT
This paper is a brief review of the research on happiness, defined in terms of subjective well-being (SWB; Diener et al., 1999), and its relation to flow (flow theory, Csikszentmihalyi, 1975 apud. Csikszentmihalyi & Csikszentmihalyi, 1988). A short history of happiness concept's evolution is presented, in order to follow the philosophical foundations for the new scientific approach on SWB and it's explanatory theories, such as the flow theory. Subsequently, scientific data regarding flow theory and its relation to SWB is being discussed. It is concluded that, even though the relation of flow to SWB seems quite intuitive, there is not enough data to support firmly such a claim; also, flow theory provides some fascinating hypotheses and further research is needed to test them.
