ABSTRACT
The article compares the effectiveness of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and bacteriology in testing for mastitis in cows. PCR involved DNA identification while bacteriology involves growing bacteria on a plate. PCR and bacteriology are compared in terms of sensitivity, contamination, speed of test, bugs identified and testing cost. Insights on how PCR is used and how it is different from bacteriology are provided by Ben Bartlett of NML, Andrew Bradley of QMMS and Andy Biggs of Vale Vet Group.
