ABSTRACT
The article discusses the textile industry's treatment of the effluent from a flame retardant finishing operation in order to comply with various state and federal water quality standards in the U.S. Recommendations are made regarding the development of treatment systems to deal with the high levels of phosphorus, nitrogen and refractory organic compounds being discharged from flame retardant finishing processes. Further work is likewise suggested on the issue of pre-treatment and post-treatment methods for nitrogen and phosphorus removal that are compatible with biological systems. Concerns about the ecological behavior of flame retardant chemicals are also considered.
