ABSTRACT
The article describes the paintings of artist Stephen Finer, including the portrait of Lord Hartley Shawcross, the 1988 "Marlene Dietrich" portrait, and the 1999 painting "Head and Shoulders of a Woman." Finer, described as following artist Frank Auerbach's practice of naming only sitters who might well be known to the viewer, labels his paintings with the sex and age of his model, the date of the painting, and sometimes an initial. The author notes that for Finer, colors replace light, description, movement and emotion.
