ABSTRACT
The article discusses the impact of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan on its economy and on the rest of the world in March 2011. It says that the disaster crippled several nuclear power plants, which damaged their cooling systems and threatened catastrophic meltdowns. The author adds that Japan's already struggling economy was imperiled by the disaster, which has been overtaken by China as the second-largest economy worldwide behind the U.S. The impact of the disaster on the U.S. and on the future of nuclear power are also discussed.
