ABSTRACT
The article examines the work of British painter John Piper, and argues that his work points to one way beyond post-modernism. It describes some of the paintings created by Piper including "Somerset Place" of 1942, "Forms on Dark Blue" of 1936, and "Gordale Scar" of 1943. The article shows that Piper's weaknesses in the post-war period have more to do with his urbanity than with his Anglicanism.
