ABSTRACT
The article reports on the increased risk of death from non-respiratory ailments facing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients on long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT). Based on a Swedish study, it would appear that such patients have a progressively higher burden of comorbidity and become more vulnerable as they age. It is stated that although cardiovascular mortality has declined in the Swedish population over the years due to improved treatments, patients with severe COPD have not benefited from them.
