ABSTRACT
The article trace the origins of English pleasure piers to the use of spas and promenades by the English upper-class. The ability of the working-class to use these piers is also discussed by the author. Emphasis is given to the development of Hastings Pier in Hastings, England. The design and construction of piers in general is also analyzed.
