ABSTRACT
The article reports on the strategy adopted by the U.S. Army's Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier's Project Manager (PM) Soldier Weapons division to improve the standard issue service rifle. The strategy aims to the enhance the M4 platform while the service invests the time necessary to properly develop, test, and field a new weapon system. The third phase calls for the evaluation of commercially available operating systems against the current gas impingement system of the M4.
