ABSTRACT
The article reports on the plan of the Brazilian city of Fortaleza to open its first metro train line in 2012 as it prepares to handle the influx of crowds attending World Cup matches in 2014. The South Line mostly follows the alignment of a moribund suburban railway, linking the suburb of Vila das Flores with the city centre. The planned construction of a cut-and-cover tunnel through the city centre was one of the biggest challenges facing the engineers. The project had been included under the government's growth acceleration programme (PAC) in 2007.
