The article focuses on the partnership of Austrian Federal Railways with Graz University of Technology and Getzner Werkstoffe to assess the benefits of under-sleeper pads in reducing railroad track deterioration. Due to the declining quality of the track ballast, innovative techniques are needed to reduce the forces applied to the ballast bed. The use of soft synthetic pads under concrete sleepers is described. An assessment of the geometrical quality of a section of track using the MDZ index is also explained.
