This article highlights the seminar organized by the Social History Curators Group on April 26, 1990, which considers the issues on the labor history in museums. The venue was the newly relocated National Museum of Labor History in its Mechanics' Institute in Manchester, England on a date shortly before its official opening. Those attending were thus given a preview of what the public will see in the Museum's initial stages: the textile conservation studio, banners and a series of thematic showcases - Chartism, the cooperative movement, trade unionism, including an interesting concentration on the tinplate workers, the women's movement, art work depicting working processes and used in the layout of ephemera, and so on. A wide range of institutions, individuals, activities and outlooks was represented at the seminar, so that any attempt to isolate and evaluate them would be in danger of criticism from many viewpoints. However, it would be a fair generalization to remark that most speakers addressed the 1990's by looking back at the way in which their institutions had evolved to their present state at the beginning of the 90's, with the implications this had for the future.
