ABSTRACT
This article offers information about the Thranite or Worker's Associations, the first extensive political movement with a basis in the lower social strata of the cities and rural areas in Norway. The political grew in the rural areas of central eastern Norway. The movement's central activity was the raising of a petition to the King. Its demand was a lowering of duties, especially on grain, in order to lower the cost of living. The extended trading rights for rural areas, improvements in living standards for cotters, measures against alcohol abuse, improvements to education, legal reforms and universal male suffrage.
