This article presents information on evolutionary trends among the French managerial group called cadres. The author discusses the definition of the term cadre, used by the French to identify a category of managers and analyzes the attitudes of these managers toward unionization, an issue that is becoming increasingly urgent in France and Italy. Personnel who would be considered managers in a U. S. firm, such as foremen or supervisors, do not belong to the category of cadres, but to the one of the maîtrise, a lower grade of supervisory personnel whose status in legal terms is similar to that of technical and administrative staff. At the same time, other categories of personnel who would not be considered managers in a U. S. firm might be recognized as belonging to the cadres, generally owing to the prestige associated with certain types of work, to the level of remuneration or to the possession of a graduate university degree. The article focuses on the changes in status and relative social position of managers in French society. It reports on social consensus on the content of the category cadre in France and decrease in status of white-collar workers vis-a-vis blue-collar workers in modern industrial society due to suppression of wage differential between the two groups.
