The author discusses the role that books and reading had during her childhood and the influence that her parents had on her reading habits and those of her siblings. The author, who is biracial, discusses her parents and maternal and paternal grandparents. It is noted that the author, as a black Canadian, was not exposed to many black authors, but after moving to the U.S. she became better acquainted with African American literature for children.
