ABSTRACT
This article reports on the Birmingham and West Midlands District Society's annual dinner held as of May 1983 in England. An impassioned call for better understanding of the severe problems facing the West Midlands was made by Anthony Beaumont, Member of Parliament, during the District Society's annual dinner, unemployment at West Midlands not stood at 15%. Scrutinizing successive governments, both Conservative and Labor, for thinking that the Midlands would always be impervious to the problems faced by the rest of the country, Beaumont angrily attacked measures aimed at directing industry to selected areas. Industrial development certificates had been used to pillage growth, Beaumont said. Meanwhile, Eddie Ray, president of the English Institute of Chartered Accountants, called for a simplified tax system which would help all business. It was better to let go of £5 million to create £100 million and extra jobs. The West Midlands had much to offer, and ray wished that it would sell itself harder. Accountants, Ray went on, needed a crusade to tell small businessmen how to set up their own businesses. In addition, he praised District Societies for being the eyes and ears, as well as the voice, of the Institute.
