The article focuses on the development of a coding system for telephone calls by AT&T Inc. in the U.S. Engineers at the company substituted manually tended circuit boards with an automated system for connecting calls. Some practicality was also introduced by AT&T into its numbering system by assigning the lowest-digit combinations to areas of high telephone concentration.
