ABSTRACT
The article offers information on the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as life support. Complications of ECMO which includes hemolysis is discussed where red blood cells are destroyed by exposure to negative pressure during blood pumping. The use and evolution of ECMO in the twenty-first century is also discussed including the use of low resistance gas exchange devices and centrifugal pumps.
