ABSTRACT
The article reports on the emergence of Shigella flexneri 2a diarrheal illnesses in South Carolina in October 2010. The three cases were investigated by the state's Department of Health and Environmental Control and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The cases occurred in a 2-year-old girl, her 6-year-old brother and father. The children were treated with ceftriaxone, piperacillin/tazobactam, azithromycin and clarithromycin while their father was treated with piperacillin/tazobactam and azithromycin.
