ABSTRACT
A photographic approach introduced recently to study nucleation kinetics in a static diffusion chamber, has been further improved by using a sensitive CCD camera instead of a photographic one. The method is based on illuminating the chamber from side by a flattened vertical laser beam. Trajectories of droplets, formed by nucleation and growing inside this beam, are recorded by a camera positioned perpendicular to this beam. Evaluation of starting points of droplet trajectories leads to vertical distribution of nucleation rate, which can then be related to calculated local values of temperature and supersaturation. This approach is independent on any nucleation theory. The main drawback of the photographic method, tedious production and evaluation of photographs, is replaced here by an automated procedure. Digitized pictures are downloaded to a PC and evaluated by standard methods of image analysis. The starting points of individual droplets are sought using a normalized correlation with a template. The position of liquid films is found using a method of maximizing sum of intensities on a line. The approach seems to keep the advantages of the photographic one, but is much more effective.
