Evaluation of surface energy for pure and doped 4-hydroxyacetophenone from induction period measurements

Crystal growth of nonlinear optical materials has become most indispensable in the field of materials science and engineering. In recent years molecular engineering has led to the development of organic crystals possessing better nonlinear optical properties. The material 4-hydroxyacetophenone is one of the organic crystals exhibiting NLO property to find applications in telecommunications and possibilities for optical information storage, frequency conversion, etc. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with space group P2[sub 1]2[sub 1]2[sub 1] and lattice parameters a = 9.48 Ã…, b = 24.15 Ã… and c = 6.09 Ã…. An attempt has been made to grow crystals of 4-hydroxyacetophenone by slow cooling technique. The material is then doped with nitro group to improve the NLO property.
