ABSTRACT
Studies in condensed phases allow the exploration of some aspects of nucleation that are weakly manifest in gas phase condensation. Time-dependent rates that depend strongly on thermal history, competition between long-range diffusion and interfacial processes, and the influence of the structures of the initial and final phases, are examples. These are discussed and illustrated with representative experimental studies. A new model for time-dependent homogeneous nucleation that takes account of the coupled fluxes of interfacial attachment and long-range diffusion is developed and key predictions are discussed.
