Changes in the concentration and size distribution of submicron aerosols accompanied with the polar lows at Maitri, Antarctica

Measurements of the submicron aerosol size distribution made during the low pressure events at the Indian Antarctic station, Maitri (70° 45'S, 11° 44'E) are reported, The total aerosol concentration increases by approximately an order of magnitude whenever a low pressure system passes over the station. The changes in the size distributions, which is generally bimodal, associated with such low pressure systems show an increase in particle concentration in nucleation mode by an order of magnitude but only marginal in accumulation mode. Observations suggest that while the increase in particle concentration in nucleation mode during these low pressure systems is due to the subsidence of midtropospheric air during the weakening of radiative inversion, the increase in the accumulation mode particles occurs either due to transportation of particles generated over sea by wave breaking or due to the erosion of exposed rocks by strong winds.
