Novel measurements of atmospheric aerosol properties

Methods that were recently developed in our laboratory to measure fundamental aerosol properties including density, water content, refractive index and shape are discussed. All of these techniques involve measurements on particles that have first been classified according to electrical mobility with a differential mobility analyzer (DMA). Density is measured by using Ehara's aerosol particle mass analyzer (APM) to measure the mass distribution of mobility-classified particles, while relative humidity-dependent water uptake involves use of the tandem differential mobility analyzer (TDMA). Refractive index and shape are measured by means of multi-angle light scattering (MALS). Concurrent measurements of size-resolved chemical composition enabled us to determine the dependence of water uptake, refractive index and shape on the major submicron species including sulfates, organic carbon, ammonium, and soil dust.
