Interaction of sound and vibrations in concrete with cracks

It has become recently known that cracks have a very high acoustic nonlinearity and it is used in nonlinear acoustic nondestructive evaluation (NANDE). One of the important applications of NANDE techniques can be inspection of civil engineering structures, and this paper presents results of NANDE feasibility tests for concrete beams. Several series of experiments were conducted with concrete engineering construction beams containing cracks. The modulation of high-frequency (∼ 5 kHz) longitudinal waves by low-frequency (less than 300 Hz) flexural vibrations in samples was investigated. It was found that the relative amplitude of the modulation signal depends on the number and sizes of cracks and can be up to -20 dB. Multiharmonic modulation spectra were also observed. Filling of cracks with water caused a decrease of modulation by 3-4 dB. The experiments demonstrate high sensitivity of the suggested technique, promising to be a novel tool for concrete inspection.
