Neutral current π[sup 0] production and the ν[sub μ]→ν[sub τ]-ν[sub μ]→ν[sub S] debate

ABSTRACT
Discrimination between the v[sub μ] → v[sub τ] and v[sub μ] → v[sub s] oscillation modes, in the context of the Super Kamiokande experiment, is discussed. It is shown that the up-down production asymmetry of neutral current π[sup 0] events cannot currently be used for this purpose. The dominant source of error in the measurement of the neutral current π[sup 0] production rate is shown to be the cross section iuncertainty and means of measuring this to a precision of 10% are discussed, with the conclusion that MiniBooNE may be able to achieve this goal. The role of the K2K long baseline experiment in discriminating between the two oscillation hypothese is considered.
