ABSTRACT
Current theoretical and experimental issues are reviewed in the light of the recent SuperKamiokande discovery. By using quark-lepton symmetries, derived from Grand Unification and/or string theories, we show how to determine the necessary neutrino parameters. In addition, the seesaw neutrino masses set the scale for the proton decay operators by “measuring” the standard model cut-off. The SuperKamiokande values suggest that proton decay is likely to be observed early in the XXIst Century.

It is noted that, but for one missing piece - proton decay - the evidence in support of grand unification is now strong. It includes: (i) the observed family-structure, (ii) the meeting of the gauge couplings, (iii) neutrino-oscillations, (iv) the intricate pattern of the masses and mixings of...

Neutrino and charged fermion masses provide important constraints on supersymmetric grand unified theories. We illustrate this by focusing on a renormalizable, supersymmetric SO(10) theory proposed long ago, that recently attracted great interest in view of its minimality. We show how the nature...

The low energy effective action of string theory depends strongly on the process of compactification and the localization of fields in extra dimensions. Explicit string constructions towards the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) reveal interesting results leading to the concept of...

We consider string realization of E6 SUSY GUT with adjoint Higgs fields in heterotic string theory. We require minimum phenomenological requirements for E6 SUSY GUTs (four-dimensional N = 1 supersymmetry, E6 grand unified group, three generations and adjoint representation Higgs fields) for our...

The article discusses scientists' efforts to find the elusive "theory of everything" which would unite the theory of relativity with subatomic theory. String theory was created in the 1970s and posits that the laws of physics may be dictated by the complex movements of string-like particles...

Data of the radiochemical experiment (E.L. Fireman, 1978) with 1.7 t of KC2H3O2, accumulated deep underground during ?1 yr, were reanalyzed to set limits on dinucleon (nn and np) decays into invisible channels (disappearance, decay into neutrinos, etc.). The obtained lifetime bounds tnp > 2.1...

Chief among these is the very accurate determination of the amount of cold dark matter in the universe from analyses using WMAP data.
