A proton decay detector using Pb/scintillator calorimeter

An idea of a general purpose proton decay/neutrino detector based on finely segmented Pb/scintillator calorimeter is described. Extruded scintillator with wave length shifter fiber readout enables us to build a large scale detector cost effectively. Proton decay lifetime, particularly the SUSY-GUT mode p → K+&vmacr;, could be studied up to τ[sub p] = 10[sup 35] years. Sufficient background suppression and reliable measurement of the background can be performed by detailed kinematic measurements (range, energy, decay topology) combined with delayed coincidence between K+ and its decay products. Fine segmentation of the detector with good position and angular resolution makes it ideal for the atmospheric/accelerator neutrino experiments to study neutrino oscillation parameters, including v[sub e] - v[sub τ] mixing, matter (MSW) effect, and CP violation. A large enhancement in the v - Pb cross section at lower energy also makes this detector effective for supernova neutrino detection. Prototyping and calibration of the detector would provide rich physics outputs along the way.
