The aim of this work is to characterize the oxidation states and coordination behavior of Pu in glasses used for excess weapons plutonium-containing materials and waste immobilization. To this end, we studied absorption spectra of Pu in the borosilicate glass of the composition developed at Khlopin Radium Institute, as well as absorption spectra of Pu in an aluminophosphate glass (for the first time, as far as we know). © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

The electronic structure of the actinides is of considerable interest as a result of the possibly correlated nature of the 5Æ’ electrons. At standard pressure, there is a profound difference between the early and late actinide metals, in the sense that the 5Æ’ electrons are delocalized...

Electronic absorption spectra of different crystalline Pu(V) compounds in the range 400–1200 nm were recorded. The correlation between the spectra of these compounds and their structure was discussed. The intensities of the absorption bands of solid compounds with the pentagonal...

Complex benzoates [{UO(CNH)CHCOO}O], [NpO(CNH)(CHCOO)], and [PuO(CNH)(CHCOO)] (CNH is 2,2′-bipyridine) were synthesized in the form of single crystals, and their structure was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The absorption spectra of the crystalline U(VI), Np(VI), and Pu(VI)...

A small-volume long-path absorption cell has been designed for use with condensable samples. The absorption cell is temperature controlled and operates over the temperature range of -10 to 80 °C. To prevent condensation of the sample on the mirror surfaces, the mirrors are individually...

The photolysis of aqueous ICN is studied by transient absorption spectroscopy covering the spectral range from 227 to 714 nm with 0.5 ps time resolution. The experimental data show that when ICN(aq) is photolyzed at 266 nm, it dissociates into I and CN and both the I([sup 2]P[sub 3/2]) and...

The formation of complexes in the fullerene C[sub 70]-toluene-liquid crystal system is investigated. The spectral dependences of absorption and emission by an optically dense concentrated system of two-level atoms are studied with allowance made for the cooperative effects. Analytical expressions are derived for the stationary spectrum of resonance fluorescence and the absorption spectrum of a...
