The reaction chemistry of PuC[sub 13], Pu[sup 0] and PuOCl with V[sub 2]O[sub 5] in the presence and absence of a NaCl/KCl salt matrix and under a variety of conditions will be presented. Our studies are intended to address three distinct questions: (1) Is V[sub 2]O[sub 5] a suitable oxidant to convert Pu[sup 0] and Pu(III) to Pu(IV)? (2) What is the identity of the reaction products, and are they volatile? And (3) what are the optimal process conditions for these reactions? © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
