ABSTRACT
The article reports on the need for the U.S. to deevlop a domestic source of medical isotopes for medical imaging in order to prevent another shortage similar to what took place when the Chalk River nuclear reactor shut down in May 2009. Nuclear medicine experts assert that four reactor producing molybdenum-99, which is used to produce the medical isotope technetium-99, are aging. National security is another reason why a domestic isotope supply is needed.
