ABSTRACT
The article focuses on Virginia and Susie Clay, publishers of Huntsville, Alabama newspaper "The Democrat." It highlights the role of the newspaper in allowing the Clay sisters a voice to speak out about a variety of issues concerning women. The Clay sisters consider the newspaper as the moral conscience for Huntsville. Virginia died in 1911 but Susie continued the newspaper alone until it was sold in 1919.
