ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the revolution in the field of computers. Two developments have occurred in the past three months that bring the desktop computer to significantly higher levels of performance. One is a new high-speed central processing unit (CPU) from Intel called the Pentium. The other is a new operating system from Microsoft called Windows NT (New Technology). While new chips are introduced about every 18 months, new operating systems backed by a major organization like Microsoft Corp. are introduced very infrequently. Windows NT is the most significant event that has occurred in the life of the micro computer. NT incorporates symmetric multiprocessing (SNIP) support for more than one processor. The desktop version supports up to 4 CPUs and the advanced server version supports up to 16 CPUs. The author saw a demonstration of two Compaq computers running several tasks in different NT windows. The only difference between the two computers was that one had 486 CPUs and the other had only one. The tasks were running at twice the speed in the two CPU box. NT has the ability to automatically assign work to Free CPUs, thereby linearly increasing capacity times the number of CPUs.
