ABSTRACT
Presents the case of an outbreak of fatal viral encephalitis that mainly affected pig farmers in Malaysia in 1999. Role of the Nipah virus, a novel paramyxovirus, in causing the outbreak; Isolation of the virus from the upper respiratory tract secretions and urine of patients with acute encephalitis; Nosocomial transmissibility of Nipah virus; Cerebral lesions resulting from subclinical Nipah virus infection.
