ABSTRACT
The article presents guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry concerning clinical decision making for preventative dental care. It comments on the use of risk assessment for dental caries and states children have a higher likelihood of developing caries if they acquire the bacteria mutans streptococci at an early age. It talks about the use of topical fluoride treatment and prophylaxis in treating and preventing periodontitis. It mentions the use of dental radiography and of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and American Dental Association guidelines which are meant to assist dentists in determining when specific radiographs are needed. It also comments on the use of dental sealants to reduce the risk of pit and fissure caries and on third molar development.
