ABSTRACT
The article analyzes the social and economic condition of Soviet Union in 1980. It is stated that the 262.4 million population of the country belongs to more than 100 ethnic groups including Varangians, Turks and Mongols. It is reported that Soviet Union has emerged as the leading producer of steel, pig iron and cement, and ranks second in the manufacture of aluminum and gold extraction. It is stated that the country ranks first in annual defense expenditures and has the second largest army.
