ABSTRACT
The article presents information on the use of Maypoles in the U.S. An American named Thomas Morton decided to show the New World how to celebrate; and he erected a Maypole of priapic pine at Merry Mount. It is stated that Maypoles meant not only festivity, but also rituals. On May Day 1627, the struggle for the U.S. was settled forever. It is stated that rituals are society's unwritten permission for civilized man to express emotions including fear, sexuality, and grief.
